Project Overview

The International Hurricane Research Center's Windstorm Simulation and Modeling Project was funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through the Florida Department of Community Affairs (FLDCA). Matching funds were provided by the participating counties of Broward, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade and Manatee.

Four research tasks were undertaken during this three-year project:

• Data acquisition of high-resolution elevation data via airborne laser terrain (e.g., LIDAR) mapping for participating South Florida counties.
• Evaluation of storm surge models including SLOSH, EFDC/HEM3D, and ADCIRC.
• Computer simulation and visualization of hurricane impacts, especially storm surge flooding.
• Development of public awareness and education programs.
