Darryl J. Hatheway

Mr. Hatheway is a 1976 graduate of Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanographic Technology and Associate of Science degree in Environmental Technology. He is a member of the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA), Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM), Association of Coastal Engineers (ACE), and Surfrider Foundation. He became a Certified Floodplain Manager in 2001 under the auspices of ASFPM. Mr. Hatheway has been an avid surfer for over 35 years, and he celebrated his 50th birthday in February 2003 by surfing the big waves on Hawaii 's north shore off the island of Oahu (pictured above).

Mr. Hatheway has over 25 years of experience in the areas of coastal and oceanographic engineering, hurricane flood and wave hazard mapping, natural disaster damage assessments, natural resource management program
development, and hazard mitigation planning. Mr. Hatheway has specialized experience in the conduct and preparation of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) coastal flood insurance studies and mapping for hurricane-prone coastal counties from Texas to Maine . He participated in a joint-Federal agency team conducting post-storm damage assessment and high water elevation surveys using GIS technology following the landfall of Hurricanes Opal and Fran. Since 1996, Mr.Hatheway has been working as Senior Coastal Scientist providing
technical consulting assistance via engineering contractors to FEMA for the National Flood Insurance Program. He is currently working with Michael Baker Jr., Inc. in Alexandria , VA as a member of the National Service Provider team assisting FEMA with its Map Modernization Program.  Mr. Hatheway's expertise in coastal flood studies includes engineering and mapping projects for communities along the Atlantic , Gulf of Mexico , Great Lakes , and Pacific coastal regions of the United States .

Mr. Hatheway has long history of non-profit environmental involvement, most recently with the Surfrider Foundation. For Surfrider Foundation national offices, Mr. Hatheway recently served from 2000 to 2003 as the Federal Policy Analyst in Washington , D.C. , and from 1996 to 2000 as a member on the National Board of Directors. He is also the co-founder of the Capitol Chapter (Washington, D.C., 1995) for Surfrider Foundation, and still serves as Chairman of their Executive Committee. The Capitol Chapter implements the programs and education outreach of Surfrider throughput the Washington DC metropolitan areas (DC, N. Virginia and Maryland ), and helps facilitate interaction between Surfrider chapters and members and their Representatives and Senators in Congress.
