Nick D'Errico

Nick D'Errico was appointed director of the International Sand Collectors Society (ISCS) (www.SandCollectors.Org ) in 1996. The ISCS was founded in 1969 and was dedicated to the interest of sand enthusiasts worldwide. Currently the Society consists of some two hundred members in sixteen countries. The ISCS is composed of some very unique members with a wide range of sand related interests. Students, amateur collectors, researchers, instructors and various professionals, to name a few, are provided with information, contacts, and the benefits of ISCS Division Advisors who specialize in particular sand related areas. The Society also affords its members a vehicle to locate and exchange sand specimens via the Society's meets, its members' directory and The Sand Paper (the Society's quarterly newsletter).

In 1999, D'Errico formed a committee of instructors to create, produce and distribute the ISCS "Sand Discovery Kits" With the generous help of Dr. David Douglass (geologist), Pasadena City College, California, and teaching members of the ISCS Education Division, these kits have been a great success by providing instructors with sand samples, lesson plans, activities and photomicrography of the samples. They also contain much needed information on various aspects of earth science including beach erosion, the science of shifting tides, the formation and movement of dunes, etc.

The ISCS is proud of its continued help in various sand related projects and studies as well as the continuing efforts at all levels of education.

D'Errico is an avid writer and speaker on the subject of sand and has conducted numerous presentations and exhibits for schools, science fairs, universities and other institutions. He has been featured in print, public radio and national television in both the United States and Canada. He is a devoted advocate in promoting sand studies to students and to the protection and study of both beach and desert environments.
At present, he has been chairing the study of early century writing sand. Other ongoing studies he continues to pursue include sonorous and ooilitic sands, and the historic applications of sand. His personal collection of international sand specimens is presently at 13,000 augmented with a collection of some 3,000 photomicrographs and other related material. He is currently working on two books about sand
