Volunteer Opportunities

We invite all communitites and organizations holding beach events to post their events here. Please forward information to NHBC@fiu.edu. Please insert the phrase Beach Event in the subject line of your mail.

The NHBC offers the public ways to make a difference through volunteer opportunities to clean up U.S. beaches. It posts announcements about many coastal cleanups to tackle the problem of marine debris. In it's least harmful form, marine debris detracts from the beauty of a waterfront landscape, but it can also be a human health and safety hazard. Hospital needles, syringes and drug vials lying on shorelines can carry disease, and broken glass and other sharp objects lie in wait for an innocent bare foot.

Marine wildlife can die as a result of eating trash they have confused for food. Fishing lines, abandoned fishing nets, rope and six-pack holders can potentially entangle wildlife, maiming and even killing them. Source: The Ocean Conservancy
